TMT BAR WEIGHT CHART

Standard IS 1786 unit weights for 6 mm to 32 mm TMT bars, with weight per 12 m piece and pieces per tonne — plus how the four brands we stock in Cuttack compare on grade, ductility and best use.

WEIGHT PER SIZE

Unit weight follows the IS 1786 formula d² ÷ 162 kg per metre. Standard bar length in our yard is 12 m.

COMMON QUESTIONS

How is TMT bar weight per metre calculated?
Use the IS 1786 formula d² ÷ 162, where d is the bar diameter in millimetres. A 12 mm bar works out to 144 ÷ 162 = 0.888 kg per metre, so a standard 12 m piece weighs about 10.66 kg.
What is the difference between Fe 550SD and Fe 550D?
Both grades have a 550 MPa minimum yield strength. Fe 550SD (super ductile) has higher minimum elongation and a tighter UTS-to-yield ratio, which is why it is preferred in seismic zones and high-rise work. Fe 550D is the standard high-ductility grade used across most residential and commercial construction.
Which TMT bar is best in India?
For high-rise and earthquake-prone sites, TATA Tiscon 550SD is the safest pick. JSW Neo and Jindal Panther (both Fe 550D) are excellent for general multi-storey and load-bearing work, while Rungta Steel Fe 500D is the value option for boundary walls, slabs and repetitive budget-led work.
How many pieces of TMT bar are in one tonne?
Divide 1000 kg by the weight of one 12 m piece. For 12 mm bars that is 1000 ÷ 10.66 ≈ 94 pieces; for 16 mm bars it is 1000 ÷ 18.96 ≈ 53 pieces.
